In Light of Catastrophe
"FINAL FANTASY as a whole has always been a large part of my life, and one of my most beloved game series. For this piece I chose to highlight one of the expansions/moments I found most interesting, FINAL FANTASY XI: Chains of Promathia. I began a paper craft journey sometime during 2020, and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make something big and nostalgic for the 20th anniversary event. I chose to create a layered paper craft with the ability to light up. The designs for Promathia, and the surrounding areas such as Al’Taieu always captured my attention. Like Al’Taieu, I wanted the background to feel otherworldly and nostalgic so I chose bright vivid colors to reflect this. I wanted Promathia to feel like a big looming challenge to overcome as the center of the piece. So Promathia was created in a traditional layered paper style. However, I wanted the warriors to stand out against this challenge like a shining light full of power. I thought a fun and interesting way to incorporate them into the piece would be to tie them back to the style of the iconic gradient logo for FINAL FANTASY XI while still staying true to the layered paper craft style using a semi-transparent paper, and holographic vinyl to catch the lights and add depth, color, and effect."
